Landmark Forest Adventure ParkLocated just six miles outside of Aviemore, Landmark Forest Adventure Park was recently voted by TripAdvisor as one of the Top 10 Parks in UK. This attraction is an absolute must for any families taking a dog friendly break in the area! Spend the day twisting through the trees on a family friendly roller-coaster, taking on one of three ropes-courses or plunging down one of three water coasters. The park is also home to it’s very own Butterfly House and is bursting at the seams with things to do for the whole family.
Unlike many attractions, dogs are permitted into the park provided that they are on a lead and kept under close control at all times. If you’re visiting the park with your furry friend then don’t forget to check out the Tree Top Trail and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels leaping from tree to tree.
Its spectacular scenery makes this area the ideal place to take your dog for a little adventure. There is an abundance of well-kept paths and sticks to keep even the most energetic of canines occupied, while you and your loved ones can soak up your stunning surroundings and breathe in that fresh Highland air.
If your limited for time then take a walk around Loch an Eileen. Its only 6 miles from Aviemore and offers some fantastic photo opportunities. Not only is this one of the most stunning places in Scotland, but the loch actually surrounds the ruins of an ancient castle that was once occupied by the grandson of Robert The Bruce, known locally as the Wolf of Badenoch. The walk circuit itself is around 7km and takes around 2 hours to complete.
The Old Bridge InnJust a stones throw from the centre of Aviemore, the Old Bridge Inn sits on the beautiful banks of the River Spey. Nestled between Aviemore and Rothiemurchus this spot is the perfect gateway between the town and the ancient forest that surrounds it. During the summer months you’ll see dog walkers and mountain bikers alike enjoying a well-earned beer outside in the sun as they return from their day’s activities.
Not just a watering hole, the Old Bridge Inn also serves some of the most sought after dishes in the whole Aviemore area. They serve food in both the main restaurant and the lounge area and it’s in the latter where dog owners can enjoy the high standard of food in the company of their furry friends. The staff here are also very friendly and will be quick to offer any visiting dogs a snack or a drink of water.
This bar was recently opened by the owners of the Winking Owl, which is located just next door. Unlike it’s neighbour though, the Bothy Bar allows dogs inside making it a good place to stop for a quick pint in the centre of town. It’s owned by the Cairngorm Brewery, so there are plenty of local ales to try! The food offering is more limited than it’s counterpart upstairs, but it’s still a good spot to relax and refuel after a long day out with the dog.
Although Aviemore is home to little more than 2,000 inhabitants it greatly benefits from the infrastructure of a town many times it’s size. It’s growth in popularity in recent years means that it has better services and facilities than many visitors might expect. In addition to a good supply of dog friendly lodges there are also three veterinary centres to be found locally, in Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey and Kingussie, which should give dog owners some peace of mind during their stay. Aviemore Taxis also permit dogs in their vehicles so visitors can enjoy a few glasses of wine in the evening, knowing that the dog can jump into a taxi with them on their way back to the lodge.
