What to bring

Layers, layers, layers. Don’t let your wardrobe spoil your holiday and remember to pack your Scottish holiday essentials:

• hats and gloves (recommended for every season other than summer)
• midge repellent (for summer)

Rothiemurchus Farm Shop & Deli, just outside Aviemore

A taste of Scotland: You’ll find locally-cured meats, seasonal veg boxes, artisanal cheeses and more in this shop on the estate’s working farm.

Balliefurth Farm Shop, Nethy Bridge

Selling produce primarily from Balliefurth Farm, located just a few miles away, pick up local prime beef and lamb, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a selection of delectable deli items.

Boat of Garten Village Shop & Post Office

This unassuming yet charming village shop is a local favourite for fresh takeaway coffee, pastries, rolls and sweet treats – as well as your daily essentials, such as bread and milk.

Many of the Cairngorms’ much-loved activities and restaurants tend to book up fast. We recommend reserving certain activities and restaurants ahead of time.

Activities to book in advance

• Landmark Forest Adventure Park, Carrbridge – With indoor and outdoor attractions, this nature-themed adventure park is fun for all the family.
• Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig – From polar bears to wolves, this 204-acre safari park and zoo hosts a wide range  of wildlife from across the world.
• Days out with the Rothiemurchus Estate – Archery, clay shooting, pony treks: you’ll find all these activities and more in this awe-inspiring Scottish estate.
• Sports at the Loch Insch Outdoor Centre – From snowsports to SUP, Loch Insch really has it all. From one-hour lessons to full-day excursions, choose from an array of activities to take in the magnificence of the Cairngorms.
• Strathspey Railway, Aviemore – All aboard! Spots fill up fast for steam adventures on the historic Strathspey, which chuffs passengers along a picturesque return route between Aviemore and Broomhill.
• Cairngorm Reindeer Herd Hill Trips, Glenmore – Visit the UK’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer on an organised hill trip, which run from May to December.

Restaurants to book in advance

• The Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore – Exuding quintessential pub charm is The Old Bridge Inn, which serves up seriously divine food. Top tip: book in for Wednesday evenings when they host lively folk sessions.
• Anderson’s Restaurant, Boat of Garten – Much loved by locals, this family-friendly restaurant is committed to using regional produce wherever possible. Enjoy wood-fired pizza, locally-caught fish and more.
• The Dell of Abernethy, Nethy Bridge – Once in a blue moon, this magical woodland venue serves up unforgettable supper clubs, featuring multi-course meals and live music. But hurry – spaces fill up fast!
